Handball
One of the fastest team sports on the planet. Handball demands speed, precision and split-second decisions. It builds athletes who think as fast as they move.
Handball at Blackshield
Handball is an Olympic sport and one of the fastest games in the world. It combines the speed of basketball with the physicality of football and the tactical depth of rugby. At Blackshield, our handball program is growing every year.
Players develop explosive speed, sharp reflexes and the ability to read the game in real time. More than that, handball teaches you to commit fully to the team, to make the pass instead of taking the shot, and to trust that the collective is always stronger than the individual. From youth players to our senior squads, every member of the Blackshield handball family shares the same belief: give everything, together.

The Fastest Team Sport
Handball was invented in the late 19th century in northern Europe. It became an Olympic sport in 1972 at the Munich Games and has since grown into one of the most popular team sports in the world, with over 30 million players across more than 180 countries.
The game is played between two teams of seven players (six outfield players and one goalkeeper) on a rectangular court. The objective is to throw the ball into the opposing team's goal. Players can pass, shoot and dribble, but they are limited to three steps without bouncing the ball and three seconds when holding it. This creates a game of extraordinary pace and intensity.
IHF Rules Updates
The International Handball Federation (IHF) regularly updates the rules to improve the game's fairness, safety and entertainment value. Here are the most significant recent changes.
Seven-Player Defence Area
The defence area (6-metre line) now has stricter enforcement. Defenders cannot enter the area to block shots, and attackers cannot land inside the area after a jump shot. This protects the integrity of the goal area.
Fast Throw-Off
Teams can now perform a fast throw-off immediately after a goal without waiting for the referee's signal. This rewards quick thinking and keeps the game flowing at high tempo.
Video Review System
Video review is now available for all goal/no-goal decisions and last-second fouls. Coaches can challenge one decision per half, ensuring critical moments are officiated correctly.
Passive Play Warning
The rule against passive play (stalling) has been refined. Referees now use a visible warning arm signal before awarding a turnover, giving teams a clear chance to attack before losing possession.
Rules Every Player Should Know
Whether you are just starting or have played for years, these are the fundamental rules that govern handball at every level.
Scoring
A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the posts and under the crossbar. Only the goalkeeper may use their feet and legs inside the goal area.
Three-Step Rule
A player may take a maximum of three steps without bouncing the ball. After catching or receiving the ball, they must dribble or shoot within three steps.
Three-Second Rule
A player holding the ball may not hold it for more than three seconds without dribbling, passing or shooting. This rule keeps the game moving and prevents stalling.
Fouls and Suspensions
Minor fouls result in a free throw. Serious fouls (pushing, hitting, holding) result in a two-minute suspension. A third two-minute suspension in the same match results in a red card and disqualification.
Goal Area
Only the goalkeeper is allowed inside the 6-metre goal area. Field players may jump into the area to shoot but must release the ball before landing.
Seven-Metre Throws
A seven-metre throw (penalty) is awarded for a foul that prevents a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The throw is taken from 7 metres, with only the goalkeeper defending.
Skills and Techniques
Handball demands explosive athleticism and technical precision. At Blackshield, we develop both offensive creativity and defensive solidity to create complete players.
Offensive Skills

The jump shot is handball's most important weapon. Players leap from the 9-metre line and release the ball at the peak of their jump, generating power and angle to beat the goalkeeper.
Wing players operate from the sides of the court, using speed and agility to find shooting angles. They must master both footwork and body positioning to score from tight spaces.
The pivot (line player) operates near the 6-metre line, using strength and positioning to receive passes and create scoring opportunities. They must be comfortable playing with their back to goal.
Fast breaks are handball's most exciting moments. After a turnover or save, players sprint forward to create numerical advantages. Quick passing and decisive finishing are essential.

Defensive Skills

Blocking is the art of stopping a shot with your body. Timing and courage are essential, as blockers must read the shooter's intention and position themselves correctly.
Most teams use a 6-0 or 5-1 defensive formation. The 6-0 keeps all defenders near the 6-metre line, while the 5-1 uses one player to pressure the ball carrier up to 9 metres.
Defence transitions instantly to attack after turnovers. The fastest players sprint forward while defenders hold their positions, creating quick scoring opportunities before the opposition resets.
Defence requires constant talking. Calling screens, switches and help assignments prevents breakdowns and keeps everyone on the same page.

Benefits of Playing Handball
Handball develops the body and the mind in ways few other sports can match. Here is what you gain from stepping on the court.
